Rafa Nadal will not participate at the Miami Open

Rafael Nadal will miss the Miami tournament in 2019. He did not participate in last year’s edition because of a hip injury. Despite the five finals played in Miami over time, the Spaniard has never managed to win the trophy in Florida.

The reason for Nadal’s absence is the same one that made him miss the semifinal against Federer at Indian Wells: tendinitis in his knees. Moreover, Rafa also talked about the fact that his entire schedule could change dramatically so that Nadal could also miss the Madrid tournament.

However, it seems that the Spaniard will be present at the Monte Carlo Masters. Nadal probably does not know exactly if he will be able to play two Masters tournaments that are pretty close to one another, because the knee injury might strike again and it will take a little longer to heal.

As for the Miami Masters, James Blake, who’s the director of the event, says he was frightened when he saw Rafa requesting medical help in the quarter final against Khachanov. Blake’s fears have come true and Nadal has been forced to retire from Miami. However, Blake says, Florida tennis fans will be able to admire Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka or Serena Williams.

Another important absence is Juan Martin Del Potro, a player with a huge fan base in Miami. The Argentine has not completely recovered and has not yet officially played this season. We hope that Delpo will recover in time to participate in the European clay season.

The Miami tournament has a total money prize equal to the one offered at Indian Wells and an equally big draw. Miami Open can be streamed online here, where you will find all the information you need. We will see if the players who performed well at Indian Wells (Dominic Thiem, Roger Federer, Angelique Kerber and Bianca Andreescu) will be able to continue with the good series of results.
